Arthritis, or "joint inflammation", basically occurs in two forms.
First is osteoarthritis, which is simply the wearing out of the cartilage that cushions our joints, resulting in inflammation. This is much like a worn out bearing in a wheel - it squeaks!
Second, are the inflammatory arthropathies, such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis. These conditions are the result of a disease process that in various ways irritates and inflames the joint. The result is essentially the same as with osteoarthritis, that is destruction of the cartilage in the joint.
The standard treatments for arthritis involve taking anti-inflammatory medications, such as Ibuprofen or Methotrexate. While we are well accustomed to using these medications, and they are necessary in some people, we strive to do better by first trying to remove the source of the joint inflammation and second by using a wide variety of safe and effective anti-inflammatory supplements.
Our initial work-up for arthritis might include standard tests like xrays, joint fluid aspiration, or blood tests to diagnose diseases such as gout, rheumatoid or lupus.
Beyond the routine, we also do blood testing for delayed food allergies that might trigger an immune response which attacks the joints. We might do stool studies to evaluate the health of the gut - where half of our antibodies are made. Testing for and removing heavy-metal toxicity is another area we find can help arthritis.
Our treatment approach to arthritis typically involves a number of supplements, customized for each patient. We might use more well-known examples such as Glucosamine, MSM, or Omega-3 oils. We also use a broad selection of lesser known supplements such as curcumin, gamma-tocopherol, boswellia, enzymes, and more. Bioidentical hormone replacement often helps diminish arthritis.
Homeopathic remedies and Traditional Chinese Medicine also round out our treatment protocols. We stress proper nutrition, body flexibility and exercise training. We also utilize passive modalities such as acupuncture and massage therapy. For patients with structural limitations we offer individual training in yoga or tai chi.
