Reflexology – As Old As Time

Reflexology or Zone Therapy is a form of treatment using pressure points which have been used in India and China for the past 5,000 years.  There is an ancient tomb drawing that dates back to 2330 BC that shows four people, one of which is receiving foot massage and another is receiving a hand massage.Dr. William Fitzgerald used “zone therapy” with his patients.  He believed there were ten energy zones which end at the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands.

By using specific massage and pressure techniques on the reflexes of the feet or hands energy blocks are removed.  The energy is flowing freely through the meridians until an energy block manifests due to injury, stress, illness, poor diet, emotional issues etc.

The cause still needs to be addressed, however Reflexology can help release the energy blocks.  If the cause is not found the patient will continue to block the energy which the Reflexologist has started to release.  If the cause is found and the patient chooses not to deal with the situation the body will continue to protect itself with blockages.

With complimentary medicine the patient is expected to take responsibility together with the therapist to effect a cure.

To better understand Reflexology place your feet together and you will see the big toes together represent the face under the nail, and the inside of the feet are the spine of the body.  The outside of the foot, under the small toe is the shoulder and moving down the foot to the ankle is the arm, and the ankle bone is the hip.  The fallopian tubes are around and across the ankles.  The midsection of the foot under the toes are the breasts, sternum and ribcage, under the breasts is the Lymphatic System and at the crown of the foot is the mid-back section.

Looking at the soul of the foot:

  • The top of the large toe is the brain
  • The top of the smaller toes is your sinuses
  • The neck is at the base of the large toe
  • The ears are under the fourth and fifth toes
  • The lungs and heart are at the ball of your foot
  • In the upper section of the arch lies the solarplexus, liver, adrenal glands, spleen, gallbladder, panacreas and transverse colon
  • In the lower section of the arch is the kidneys, ascending colon, appendix, small intestines, bladder, rectum and ureter tubes

Disorders are often detected during the treatment, however Reflexology is not a method of diagnosis and patients are advised to consult a doctor.  There have been numerous conditions that have been helped with Reflexology, such as migraine headaches, insomnia, epilepsy, sinusitis, eye and ear problems, thyroid issues, breast cancer, asthma, bronchitis, angina, hepatitis, stress, ulcers, diabetes, indigestion, kidney stones, cystitis, constipation, ovarian cysts, sciatica, fibroids, infertility, enlarged prostate, skin conditions etc.

The massage itself works at the depth the patient is able to comfortably with stand and previous conditions are taken into consideration before treatment is applied.
